HHYF TROTTINGBREDS IN TRAINING FOR UPCOMING CAMPS
The Proclaimers may have been willing to walk 500 miles and then walk 500 more, but thanks to the efforts of several volunteer trainers, the Harness horse Youth Foundation's stable of Trottingbreds will need to go only about half that far in preparation for this summer's HHYF youth camps. But while at the camps, those horses "will be working, working hard for you."
After a winter of rest and relaxation under the eye of Patty Logan at Brittany Farms, the stable has been dispersed across the country to begin spring training. The horses will jog a minimum of 200 miles, eventually working up to five miles a day, ready for training miles in the 1:30 range for a half mile. They are being prepped for student participants who will jog, train and exhibit them with assistant drivers during the summer tour.
The HHYF trainers, who volunteer their time and efforts, along with the horses in their care are: Lisa Beinhauer at The Meadows (Dusty Sensation); Noel Daley Stable at Magical Acres (Jessica Direct); Eddie and Karen Dennis (LR Trixie) and Eddie and Janet Davis (Ima's Hit), both training at their own farms; Donna and Jim Marshall, III (Jandi Tuff As Sky) and Julie and Andy Miller (Sweet Karen), both at Gaitway Farms (which hosts a HHYF youth camp July 26-30); Kim Rinker at Maywood Park (CD's Miss M) and the Jimmy Takter Stable, who is conditioning Royal Attire at his farm. Karen Fagliarone has been the HHYF's East-coast coordinator.
HHYF is able to keep registration fees at $150 per camper thanks to the generous support of its sponsors. Several sponsorship opportunities remain available for this year's horses and camps and openings remain for participants at all scheduled camps.
