MHS OFFERS NEW SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS INVOLVED IN INDIANA RACING
MHS (Midwest Harness Supply) has established a new scholarship for students who have relatives involved in the Indiana racing program. The scholarship will be administered by the Harness Horse Youth Foundation. Former HHYF graduate Trent Stohler and his friend Joe Putnam are joint sponsors as well as co-owners of MHS, the tack store at both Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs.
Eligibility requirements for the MHS Scholarship state that:
- Applicant, his/her parent(s), grandparent(s), and/or legal guardian must be licensed by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission in the year prior to application though only one relative must be licensed to be eligible;
- Applicant must be pursuing higher education at college, university, or trade school;
- Applicant must be enrolled as a full time student (12 credit hours minimum);
- Applicant must be at least a high school senior at time of application.
Stohler answered candidly when asked about the reason for creating the scholarship. “There are many horse people and families throughout the Midwest who have supported Joe and I as horsemen and through the tack store. We want to give something back. What better way to help those within our industry than to provide financial assistance to a young person who has dreams of going to college.”
The deadline for the inaugural scholarship is April 30, 2009. The application can be downloaded by clicking here.
Established in 1976, the Harness Horse Youth Foundation addresses youth education throughout the United States and Canada. A charitable organization, the HHYF continues to enlarge and improve its programs.
