Martin Scharf has been fortunate in his life in many ways.  In harness racing, he was blessed with the 2000 Horse of the Year Gallo Blue Chip.  His decision to give back to the industry from which he has gleaned so much pleasure could have taken several different directions.  After a discussion with the Harness Horse Youth Foundation in 2004 and some thoughtful consideration, he decided to establish a scholarship in honor of his champion pacer.  He wanted the scholarship to assist children of horsemen.  He wanted the scholarship to benefit children in his area.  He wanted the scholarship to be significant and life-changing to the students selected.

Martin achieved his each of his wishes but has received much in return.  He takes a very active role in all facets of the scholarship administration and selection.  He makes the time to contact the recipients himself to give them the news of winning the scholarship.  He follows up with the recipients to see how their academic life is unfolding. Most importantly, with just a little observation, one can see that Mr. Scharf truly enjoys helping others achieve success.  He simply is radiant when meeting the young people and their families.

Mr. Scharf, by creating the Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship, serves as a stellar example of both giving back and in receiving.

The 2007 awards were presented December 1 at the Meadowlands winners circle.

Andrea Nickerson received the $15000 Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship.  Ms. Nickerson is attending Elmira College and is studying medicine though she is undecided whether to work with humans or animals.  Having been raised by very supportive parents, her father who is a dairy farmer and horseman and her mother who is a teacher, she understands the responsibilities of animal care as well as the importance of studying and learning.  Ms. Nickerson is from Friendship, New York.

Te’neshia Washington received the $5000 Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship.  She attends St. Rose and is studying graphic design.  Ms. Washington and her family are from Monticello, New York.
